I'm a hopeless romantic who smiles so much behind my camera that my cheeks hurt by the end of most of my shoots! I’m a wedding and family photographer, virtual storyteller, golden sunset-seeker, and the ultimate hype woman.
Hey there, lovebirds! If you’re dreaming of saying “I do” with Lake Superior crashing behind you, I’m SO here for it. The North Shore is basically Minnesota’s version of the ocean, and it’s hands down my favorite place to photograph love stories.

Whether you’re planning a cozy 20-person micro-wedding or a just-the-two-of-you elopement, the North Shore has some quirks you need to know about. From permits to perfect lighting, I’m spilling all my secrets to help you pull off the most incredible North Shore wedding.
Getting married in Minnesota is actually super easy! You don’t even need to be a resident, and the whole process is refreshingly fast.
You can grab your marriage license at any county office in Minnesota. It doesn’t have to be Lake or Cook County! The fee is typically $115, but here’s a fun tip: complete 12 hours of premarital counseling and it drops to just $40.
There’s zero waiting period, which means you can pick up your license and get married the same day. How amazing is that? Your license stays valid for 6 months, so you’ve got plenty of time to plan.
You’ll need two witnesses over 16 years old. If you’re eloping with just the two of you, I can often sign as one! We just need to find a friendly hiker for the second signature, and honestly? Minnesotans are SO nice. They always say yes.

The North Shore is beautifully moody all year round. As your Minnesota wedding photographer, I absolutely love that drama, but you need to know what you’re getting into!
This is your safest bet for great weather. You’ll get the lowest chance of rain, comfortable temps, and way fewer bugs. The lake keeps everything cool while the sun stays warm and perfect.
This is peak season, and for good reason! The maples turn fiery red and orange against that gorgeous teal water. It’s absolutely stunning for photos.
Quick heads up: this is also the busiest time for MN weddings on the North Shore. Book your lodging 6 to 12 months ahead if possible. Consider a weekday wedding to dodge the leaf-peeper traffic on Highway 61!
Frozen waterfalls and snow-covered cliffs photograph like an absolute dream. However, temps can drop well below zero, so we’ll be taking photos in 15-minute bursts and warming up in the car between shots. Worth it for those epic images though!

Light is EVERYTHING for your photos. On the North Shore, the sun rises over the lake and sets behind the Sawtooth Mountains.
Sunrise is my absolute hero recommendation. The sun comes up directly over the water, giving you soft, pastel lighting that’s just chef’s kiss. Plus, you get total privacy! Popular spots like Artist’s Point or Palisade Head are usually empty at 6:00 AM.
Sunset gives you beautiful warm light filtering through the trees. But because the sun dips behind the hills before hitting the horizon, we lose light faster than you’d expect. This is also peak tourist time, just FYI.
Let’s talk about where to actually have your ceremony! And please, please don’t skip getting permits where needed. Rangers patrol these areas, and nothing kills the vibe like getting kicked out mid-vow.
Gooseberry Falls, Tettegouche, and Split Rock are dramatic, accessible, and absolutely gorgeous. You’ll generally need a Special Use Permit for ceremonies, which typically costs $50 to $150.
Here’s the thing: a permit doesn’t grant exclusive use. Hikers can still walk by during your vows! But don’t worry, I know all the hidden spots in these parks where we can get away from the main boardwalks for more privacy.
Palisade Head offers stunning 300-foot cliffs that photograph like a dream. You can’t reserve this space and parking is super tight, so it’s better for portraits than a seated ceremony with guests.

Black Beach has moody black sands that look straight out of Iceland! It’s a fantastic, edgy spot that creates beautiful contrast with a white dress.
If you want more of a “venue” vibe where you can have a seated dinner and a roof in case of rain, check out Lutsen, Bluefin Bay, or Grand Superior Lodge.
Places like Bluefin Bay have private rooms (like the Shore Room) overlooking the lake. They’re perfect for a post-elopement dinner with 10 to 15 family members!
Even if you’re not doing a traditional reception, you still deserve an incredible meal to celebrate! Let’s go over some of the top spots to celebrate with just yourselves or your loved ones.
New Scenic Café in Duluth is the holy grail of North Shore dining. Think intimate New American food with amazing wine. They offer private dining experiences that feel really upscale and special.
Angry Trout Cafe in Grand Marais does farm-to-table and dock-to-table right on the harbor. They don’t usually take reservations, but for a small elopement dinner, it’s absolutely iconic.
Vue North in Two Harbors is a newer spot with massive windows overlooking the lake. Perfect for a modern, classy celebration vibe!

The North Shore is wonderfully wild. It’s windy, the cell service is spotty, and your dress will probably get a little dirty at the hem. But here’s the thing: embrace it all!
The best photos happen when you let the wind mess up your hair and just focus on the person you’re marrying. That’s where the real magic lives. The most important part of your wedding day is the marriage to your best friend; let’s make it amazing!
Ready to start planning your North Shore adventure? Let’s grab coffee and look at maps together! I cannot wait to capture your story against those gorgeous cliffs and crashing waves.
